September 17, 2020 Chapter #079 Presentation: De-escalation in a Time of Tension
Deputy Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Mental Health & Owner of Caldera Associates
Fox can be contacted through email: firstname.lastname@example.org
With the increase of physical violence and verbal confrontations that we’re seeing across the nation from individuals as businesses attempt to implement mitigation efforts, those duties are becoming more and more assigned to our in-house or contracted security personnel. CDC has even recently put out guidance on how to implement these measures and provided steps in an attempt to reduce these cases of violence. Our speaker this month will be Mourning Fox, Deputy Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Mental Health and owner of Caldera Associates discussing de-escalation measures and training’s that would be beneficial to pass on to our front line personnel. Fox, as he is known to his friends, has over 25 years’ experience in the mental health field. He will be discussing the benefits of being prepared to verbally de-escalate situations, especially during this volatile time we are living through, including public relations impact, liability/financial impact, and moral and ethical considerations. He will also be discussing some of the basic aspects that should be considered when preparing yourself, your staff or contracted individuals who have direct interaction with individuals and situations that have the potential to become escalated. Fox has been trained in many forms of de-escalation including his experience at the Massachusetts Police Academy, being a NAPPI (Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention), CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) and MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) trainers. He is also a graduate of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations) Hostage Negotiation course and has provided training’s and consultations to law enforcement agencies, social service agencies, businesses, and schools and colleges.
